When the distance you are travelling will exceed the EV range, switch to HV mode when you get on the highway and let the ICE operate in its most efficient configuration. That's one of the big advantages of a PHEV you have the ICE for long distance drives without having to pay the higher cost of entry for a BEV with similar range.
